🎓 NEP College Major & Career Alignment Advising Service

Empowering Black students and families to make informed, strategic college and career choices grounded in equity, impact, and long-term value.


🔑 SERVICE OVERVIEW

  • Target Audience: High school juniors/seniors, college students (undeclared or changing majors), first-generation students, and families

  • Format: 4 sessions (1 hour each) over 2–4 weeks

  • Delivery: Virtual or in-person

  • Outcome: A customized advising portfolio + 4-year academic & career roadmap


📅 SESSION BREAKDOWN

🔹 Session 1: Discovery + Student Profile Mapping

Key Objectives:

  • Understand student/family goals, values, challenges, and strengths

  • Identify student’s interests, talents, and possible career pathways

  • Introduce framework: purpose, power, and prosperity

Activities:

  • Intake form review

  • Career interests & values inventory (RIASEC or equivalent)

  • Initial discussion about major/career aspirations

Evaluation:

  • Completed intake form

  • Clear articulation of 2–3 areas of interest

  • Student self-assessment on strengths/challenges

Printed Aids Needed:

  • Student Intake Form (fillable PDF or paper)

  • NEP College & Career Discovery Worksheet

  • Career Cluster Handout (based on RIASEC or similar model)


🔹 Session 2: Pathway Building + Economic Equity Lens

Key Objectives:

  • Link interests to viable majors and career sectors

  • Introduce real salary data and debt-to-income considerations

  • Identify majors with high ROI and relevance to identity/mission

Activities:

  • Review national data on earnings by race and major

  • Analyze student loan impact on career path

  • Present top 3 career-major alignment tracks personalized to student

Evaluation:

  • Student selects top 1–2 pathways of interest

  • Demonstrates understanding of income vs. debt dynamics

Printed Aids Needed:

  • Career ROI by Major Chart (Black-focused version)

  • Debt-to-Income Ratio (DTI) Worksheet

  • Major Comparison Matrix


🔹 Session 3: Academic & Institutional Planning

Key Objectives:

  • Build a sample 4-year academic plan

  • Identify colleges/programs with good institutional fit

  • Review support systems: financial aid, internships, mentorship

Activities:

  • Map potential college list by fit and funding

  • Discuss HBCUs, PWIs, community colleges, and honors programs

  • Explore career ladders and graduate school alignment

Evaluation:

  • Draft academic + institutional plan

  • Student reflects on cultural and academic fit

🔹 Session 4: Network, Mentorship & Long-Term Planning

Key Objectives:

  • Build mentorship & sponsorship strategies

  • Teach how to access professional networks and internships

  • Create a roadmap for career launch & early leadership

Activities:

  • Guide to finding mentors (LinkedIn, Afrotech, NABA, etc.)

  • Review digital footprint & portfolio basics

  • Finalize a personalized NEP College & Career Portfolio

Evaluation:

  • Student completes a College & Career Roadmap

  • Can articulate “major mission” and next 3 steps

📘 FINAL DELIVERABLES

At the end of the advising service, each student receives:

  • NEP College & Career Portfolio (PDF or Binder) including:

    • Major-matching results

    • Career cluster alignment

    • ROI charts and financial overview

    • 4-year academic & internship timeline

    • Mentorship/network plan

    • Top recommended schools/programs

  • Certificate of Completion (optional for program use)
